When the calendar hits September, there are two main things in the golf world with hot takes and discussions. The FedEx Cup race or better known as the PGA Tour “playoffs” and then every other year the Ryder Cup. Both events having their own excitement, but with two very different accolades. The playoff system in golf showcases top names all having successful season longevity by staying near the top of the leader boards week end and week out. This great play all season long, now rewarded with opportunity to stay in contention and win the Tour Championship in Atlanta to lift the large prize money FedEx Cup. This a very individual award with the wallet with the most to gain.
The second main event unfortunately only occurring every two years, comes with the opportunity for the best players from the United States of America to tee it up against the very best from Europe. This year’s drama and anticipation heads away from the US to Paris. For golf fans across the country, this gives us the ability for an individual game to be highlighted in a team aspect. This both a tremendous honor for the players as well as fun for all viewers to see competition played for the name on the front of the jersey rather than the normal name on the back. The eagerness for the event first starts to set in from the release of the captain’s picks.
The United States captained by Jim Furyk. A true veteran of American golf and a great leader for this year’s team faced with the challenge of the away game in France I think have made the necessary picks so far to take down team Europe . Three of the four picks just released that include fan favorites Bryson Dechambeau, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. Bryson the new American sensation known for his “mad scientist” approach will also bring great golf. This player assumed no doubt to make the team after finishing just one slot from the automatic qualifying now officially named to the team after his hot play with back to back playoff event wins.
Is there really a Ryder Cup to be had without Phil and Tiger wearing the red white and blue? Most would argue and even though the stats would say lefty has had an average season, there is not too many players that I would rather have then Phil. With his experience, leadership, and ability to rise to another level when it matters most, will become a useful addition to this year’s team. Lastly, for the man who normally wears red on Sundays, it will be great to be able to see him wear it all week come the last week of September. Playing like the Tiger of old, with long drives on both sides of the rough while also draining everything he looks at with that magical Scotty, will truly bring excitement and stories to tell for a long time. Tune in for more articles to come, for more on this year’s event including the final United States pick as well as reviews on team Europe!
