Unlike the professionals that make ninety percent of their putts from four feet, most amateurs are begging for their playing companions to give them those knee knocker distances. For most amateur players, if they miss too many from this distance they have a Happy Gilmore meltdown on the putting green which will lead to struggles in other aspects during the round.
The biggest aspect in putting to create added consistency is body control. In the short length putts the biggest mistake I see from players is over excitement and early movement towards the cup. This might be with their eyes, feet, or even upper body but all producing off center putts. The read for this length of putt is normally staying within the hole, so players need to add patience and not let their hands get away from them.
To have more putts end up at the bottom of the cup, focus on the rocking of your shoulders. This focus helps eliminate the involvement from legs or hips which will improve the overall balance of your putting motion. This added balance will help you hit more solid putts and lower scores!
