Masters Week!!!

As the calendar turns to April that means one thing for all golf fans. Its Masters time! So as the best in the world drive down legendary magnolia lane entrance to Augusta National, the use of the putter is going to separate the ones that do and don’t play the weekend. This course famous for its large and undulated greens, which results in much tougher putting conditions and players this week having more “knee knocker” length putts missed. These putts not only will be a deciding factor on who gets to put on the historic green jacket but also a time for amateurs to relate to the missed short length putts experienced on the frequent basis at their local club. Hitting a two hundred and fifty yard drive while finding the fairway is always impressive but the five footer missed means just as much when added to the scorecard.

To help lower scores and bring more confidence from round to round, having the putter be the most reliable club in the bag over the driver is a necessity. To make more of these shorter yet important putts and not look like an angry Happy Gilmore on the putting green, begins by adding more of your focus to the needed speed. When feeling desperate to finish the hole, most of the time players just aim for the middle of the cup and erratically ram the putt hoping it will hit the back and fall in. Normally this approach results in not only missing but having a further returning putt leading to added anger on the next tee box. Making more three to nine foot putts during a round not only lower scores but lowers the anxiety from hole to hole.

To add comfort and confidence in your flat stick this season, focus on repeating a fluid tempo as well as emphasis on the putter finish not the result of the ball rolling. Too many players with shorter putts, rush their motion with their eyes on the ball not the putter. So just as basketball players while shooting free throws focus on their release finishing in the hoop, the same principal can be done in golf. When needing that short putt to beat your buddy, focus on having the center of the putter finish in the center of the cup and hear that ball rattle at the bottom.
