As spring begins to turn to summer, the PGA tour heads to the PGA major championship at legendary Bethpage State Park in Bethpage, NY. For those wanting to lift one of the biggest trophies in professional sports, control with the driver is going to be an absolute must. Unlike the amateur world where two fairways over is sometimes an option, being able to have explosive distance and finding the fairway is going to separate the winner this week from those not competing during the weekend. To help those not competing on television from continuing to struggle with the driver this season, follow these tips. This way you can to spend less time in the trees and stop pretending the ball you dropped from your pocket hit ten trees to find its resting position.
To continue to find the short grass more often the rest of this season, begins with confidence. For most players, having no clue where a driver is going to end up is unfortunately apart of every round. This can immediately be improved with a better balance. For most players trying to drive their golf ball into another area code, they look more like a spinning top than a golfer trying to control a swing. To gain maximum distance some think they have to swing with 110% energy and most of the time find themselves on the ground not the ball in the fairway. While trying to achieve maximum distance this gambling accuracy. It does you no good if the ball travels two hundred fifty yards while also going into the second cut or worse out of bounds.
Finding more balance while being able to hold both the back swing as well as finish is not only a rarity for those with a high handicap, but not even a priority. In my instruction creating both a “controlled” as well as “full” two part swing is a necessity for improved long term distance and accuracy. Having more of a focus on the motion of the swing rather than the possible result, will not only limit curvature but also add distance because of center of the club face contact. Try this out next time you are trying to tee it up with the rest of your weekend foursome to add more confidence and comfort in your long game!
