Remembering “the King”

When it comes to golf royalty, one name sticks out from the rest. The King of our game, also known as Arnold Palmer. This week the PGA tour celebrates Mr. Palmer with the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. Unfortunately the winner of this weeks event will not have the opportunity to shake the hosts hand on the seventy second green, but his presence will be felt by all players, volunteers, and patrons.       There are so many images of Mr. Palmer that come to mind this week. From his legendary thumbs up, iconic swing finish, as well as famous lemonade and tea beverage that showcases the colorful umbrella. My most memorable memories of the King including the way he was able to impact and create a positive light to others. Stories of the involvement in the game of golf being past down generations because of a man named Arnold Palmer.      A journey starting of a man from a small steel town near Pittsburgh, that now has his name atop hospitals, airports, and golf courses did not happen by coincidence. The son of a groundskeeper and superintendent, golf has always been major part in the Kings story. A successful amateur player, sixty two time professional tour winner, and seven time major champion. A larger than life figure, that attacked both golf courses and life with full speed. A man wearing the iconic cardigan with shoulders big enough to carry the weight and responsibility being the main face of golf until his death. A hero that will have his accomplishments from the golf courses he played in the record books remembered, but a man of the people that created an army that has a legacy that will live on forever.      Unfortunately my generation did not get to see that iconic swing in action but his spirt, charisma, and sportsmanship has people like myself apart of Arnies Army. For the avoid fan tuning in to the golf channel every week, Mr. Palmer was a co founder. A visionary that helped create a connection with his fans that has never been repeated. He was first ever golfer to win the presidential medal of freedom, second golfer recipient of the congressional gold medal, and helped form golf into the international game it is today.      Others have and will continue to add accomplishments within the ropes that surpasses Arnold Palmer. More names will continue to be added to the list of major champions, hall of fame members, and be debated as the greatest player of all time. Undoubtedly there is only one leader crowned as “the King” of golf. As another generation I hope continues to grow this army, it comes with following in the footsteps of its fearless leader. While playing golf or while conducting yourself away from the links, swing your swing and always remember to give someone else a reason to smile and give an Arnold Palmer thumbs up.
